Introducing the New National Curriculum in Key Stage 1:
From this September 2014, the Government has introduced a new national curriculum, which has become statutory for all grant maintained schools. Children in Year 1 and Year 2 at Belvedere Infant and Nursery School will now follow the new curriculum as a result.
Aims of the New National Curriculum:
The main aim is to raise standards. The current government recently reviewed the previous curriculum and found that it did not contain sufficient levels of challenge and that higher expectations should be placed on children from their early stages of education. The Government believes that the new National Curriculum has been designed to produce productive, creative and well-educated students.
How Schools are expected to implement this:
Schools are free to choose how they organise their school day, as long as the content of the National Curriculum programmes of study is taught to all pupils. By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programmes of study.
The new National Curriculum identifies what to teach, but not how to teach. It is essential to distinguish between the statutory National Curriculum and the whole school curriculum. All schools must provide a curriculum that is broad, balanced and meets the needs of all pupils.
The New Curriculum at Our School:
At Belvedere Infant and Nursery School we have fully embraced the changes to the National Curriculum. As a staff, we have been preparing for its implementation over the previous academic year, have attended local and national training and we have worked together in meetings to ensure that we have a full and clear understanding of the requirements for September 2014.
We have designed our new school curriculum with enthusiasm and pride, ensuring that the children have the best opportunities to meet the requirements of the new National Curriculum, through engaging and exciting themes and by maintaining high expectations and levels of challenge for all of our amazing children. The school curriculum is broad and balanced and we are dedicated to ensure that all our children are able to maximise their true potential during their valuable time at our school.
We follow the ‘Sounds Write’ phonics programme and use a range of other curriculum schemes to support our teaching of the curriculum. Initially, we use Dandelion Readers to help the children with learning to read. We broaden their reading experience, by using a range of schemes that develop their reading skills.

This school year at Belvedere Infant School we have been very excited about implementing a new and highly structured Maths Mastery approach to teaching maths concepts in Year 1 and Year 2 called Maths-No Problem!, which is designed to leave no one behind and to deepen understanding. This scheme is closely linked to the new national curriculum and addresses level of mathematics now expected in each year.
The way in which concepts are explored and taught may be different from the way you were taught maths yourself, therefore it is important that you have a good understanding of ‘how they are being taught now.’
The year is split into two halves and coverage is detailed below.
Maths no problem
In order to help you support your children best at home, we have secured some parents support materials, which explain the thinking and teaching behind the key concepts – they are an inspiring watch!
We do hope that after watching them you will be able to see clearly how the lessons build up the understanding while motivating the children to achieve, excel and aspire.
We will also be supplementing this parent support with some parents’ workshops for Year 1 and 2 in the Spring Term.

We use Espresso in school to support the learning and to motivate our children. We are pleased to inform you that your child can now access this at home. Espresso is an online curriculum service that provides video-rich resources to schools throughout the UK. It contains thousands of videos and activities, as well as a weekly news service.

Assessment & Reporting to Parents:
Phonics testing will remain in Year 1 and children who do not achieve the pass mark will be retested in Year 2. These results will be reported to parents as before.
End of Key Stage 1 assessments (at Year 2) has been left much as it was. Teachers will make evidence-based professional judgements on the children’s abilities, alongside completing external tests that are internally marked and moderated. There will now, in addition, be a new test on Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.
Year 2 children are to be assessed on their knowledge of the previous national curriculum at the end of the year (July 2015), as they have been taught this content. Attainment levels will be reported to parents (as before).
For the Year 1 children, from September 2014 and then to include the Year 2 children from September 2015, we will no longer be assessing them and reporting to you on the attainment targets of the previous statutory curriculum. You will now be informed of how secure your child is in their achievement of the end of year group expectations, which are outlined in the National Curriculum 2014.
We will inform you of one of the following levels of achievement:
- Beginning Plus
- Working Within
- Working Within Plus
- Secure Plus
We would expect the majority of children to achieve 'Secure' in relation to meeting the end of year group expectations in each area of learning. Some children may exceed this and will be awarded the level of 'Secure Plus'.
If a child is not yet 'Secure' in achieving the end of year group expectations we will discuss with you how we can work in partnership to enable your child to accelerate their progress. Please speak to the class teacher if you have any questions.
Whichever of these levels your child has been awarded, we will be reporting to you to share and celebrate their achievements and set appropriate next steps in their learning, each school term, through the 'My Unique Story' reports and parent consultation meetings. It is through working together that we can enable your child to progress, achieve and maximise their potential.

Early Years – Learning and Development in Nursery and Reception:
In Nursery and Reception the children follow the statutory guidance of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework 2012. We enable the children to access their learning and maximise their development through stimulating and challenging provision. Please see the following documents for information on the statutory guidance and the themes that are covered throughout children’s time in the early years at our school.
Assessment and Reporting to Parents:
In Nursery and Reception children work towards the Early Learning Goals, which are statements of expected achievement by the end of Reception. There are 17 ELGs within 7 areas of learning. Some children may exceed this is some areas. If children are not at the expected level, then we will be supporting your child in school to catch up and will offer you advice on how you can support with this at home.
This will be defined and reported to you in the following way:
- Emerging – A child who is beginning to access the curriculum appropriate for their age with some level of support
- Expected – A child who is working at an age related level and has achieved the expectations for the year group/key stage
- Exceeding – A child is who is working beyond the expectations for their particular stage.
